Free AI coding tools in 2026: what the free plans of 103 tools really give you

We sorted every free AI coding assistant and app builder in our directory by what the free plan gives, which makers never publish a number, and who may train AI on your code.

Data as of · catalog aff5224

The headline

15 of the 32 free AI coding plans we researched say they may use your content to train AI.

Only 7 say they don’t. For 7 we found no statement either way. Each answer is listed below with the maker’s own words and a link to the page.

TL;DR

  • 103 AI coding tools give you at least a month free, and 98 (95.1%) are free to keep rather than free for a while.
  • 29 (28.2%) are open source or run on your own API key: free to run yourself, with no allowance to run out of.
  • Of the 74 hosted tools, 45 give a number for the free allowance. For 34 we have no number: the maker says “limited” or doesn’t say.
  • 15 of 32 researched free plans say they may use your content to train AI. 7 say they don’t.
  • When free runs out, the cheapest paid plan has a median of $20 a month (71 tools with a USD price).

The tools

103 coding tools, two kinds of job

50 build whole apps from a prompt (vibe coding and AI app builders). 53 help you write, review or run code you own: editor assistants, coding agents and code review.

Every tool here gives at least a month free: a free plan, free credits, or a trial of 30 days or more. Shorter trials aren’t counted. The full lists are on free AI tools to write code and free AI web app builders.

Kinds of free

Most are free to keep

Each tool gets one main kind of free: the best free option open to everyone. 98 of 103 are free to keep; 5 are free only for a while.

Where to go next

Methodology

  • Data: the Free AI For That catalog (data/tools.json, sha256 5a7fa676…, commit aff5224, 24 October 2026). A script (scripts/reports/build-report-stats.ts) counts every number with the functions the site uses to list a tool and to assign its kind of free.
  • Which tools: Live tools filed under Vibe Coding or AI Coding Assistants, or tagged for writing code, reviewing code or building web apps. That’s 103 tools. Every listed tool gives at least a month free: a free plan, free credits, or a trial of 30 days or more.
  • Counts come from the catalog, where each free offer was recorded from the maker’s own pages between 19 October 2026 and 23 October 2026.
  • Named tools: every tool this report names was re-checked on the maker’s page on 24 October 2026. Next to each one we show the maker’s words and a link to the page we read them on. 80 facts passed the re-check. 1 we couldn’t re-confirm (the page had changed, blocked us or didn’t say it clearly), so those tools aren’t named here. They still count in the totals, as the catalog records them.
  • App builders are tools filed under Vibe Coding or tagged for building web apps. Everything else counts as an assistant or agent.
  • Training: “may” means the maker says it may use your content (prompts, code, files or outputs) to train or improve AI models, including when it’s on unless you opt out. “No statement we could find” means our research found nothing either way on the maker’s pricing page, terms or privacy policy. It doesn’t mean no.
  • Shares: 46.9% of researched plans say they may train; we researched 32 of the 103 tools in depth, so this describes those plans, not every tool.
  • Cards: we don’t say whether a signup asks for a card. We only say that once we’ve completed the signup ourselves.
  • Percentages are rounded to one decimal place. Each one states its denominator.
  • Corrections: see something wrong? Tell us. We’ll re-check it and log any change on Free plan changes.
