Overview

Instructor turns LLM responses into validated Pydantic objects: you define a model, and it builds the schema, checks the reply and retries when validation fails. It is MIT licensed, available for Python, TypeScript, Go, Ruby, Elixir and Rust, and works with hosted or local models.

Key features

  • Define the output you want as a Pydantic model and get a typed object back
  • Automatic retries when the response fails validation
  • Streaming of partial responses and lists
  • One from_provider interface for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Cohere, Ollama, DeepSeek and more
  • Runs open-source models locally through Ollama, llama-cpp-python or vLLM
  • Hooks for logging, monitoring and custom error handling

Best for

People
Python developers extracting structured data from text with LLMs, Teams that switch between LLM providers, Developers running local models who need validated JSON output

Limitations

  • You need an LLM provider key or a local model; provider usage is billed by that provider
  • A code library: it needs programming, with basic Pydantic knowledge helping
